Rwanda Genocide
The Rwanda Genocide was the killing of the Tutsis people by the Hutus in
1994. The genocide was sparked by the death of the President Juvenal
Habyarimana, a Hutus, when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport. There
have been always been disagreements between the Hutus and Tutsis people. The
Tutsis people were automatically blamed for the President’s death. The Rwandan
Defense Forces were gangs of government soldiers and militias and were
encouraged to kill off the Tutsi population. These groups were encouraged by the
presidential guard and radio propaganda. Gender-targeted crimes were common,
typically women; this included rape and mutilation of the body. After being
attacked, the women usually died due to HIV/AIDS. To end the catastrophic deaths
of Tutsi, the Rwandan Patriotic Front came in and defeated the last of the
government. The aftermath of the genocide was astounding. Nearly
500,000–1,000,000 Tutsi people were killed.
